As we pause to give thanks, take inventory of our lives and count our blessings this Thanksgiving holiday, it's always appropriate to be aware of those around us who might be suffering or do not have their most beloved around any more.

Case in point, 8 year-old Myles Eckert. He is a Gold Star Kid, meaning he is the child survivor of a father who was killed in Iraq while serving in the Army just five weeks after he was born.

Two years ago, the young boy and his remaining family went out to eat. Upon entering the restaurant, young Myles found a $20 bill. Instead of keeping it, he gave it to a soldier who also happened to be dining there, and wrapped it in a Post-It note with a handwritten message:

"Dear Soldier -- my dad was a soldier. He's in heaven now. I found this 20 dollars in the parking lot when we got here. We like to pay it forward in my family. It's your lucky day! Thank you for your service. Myles Eckert, a gold star kid."

The recipient of the gesture was Lt. Col. Frank Dailey who said not only did the kind act inspire him, but gave him a "lifetime direction, for sure."

CBS News caught up with the two of them. Beware of onion-cutting ninjas while viewing and have a happy Thanksgiving!
