The Seattle Mariners today announced that Ichiro Suzuki will be taken off of the club's active 25-man roster and will transition to a position in the front office created for him.

Amazingly, it has been 17 years ago, on this very date, that the baseball world was formally introduced to Ichiro Suzuki.

Prior to last night's series opener at SafeCo Field, the Seattle Mariners not only welcomed the visiting Miami Marlins to town for a three-game series, they also welcomed back one of their adopted sons, Ichiro Suzuki.

For Seattle Mariners fans, this weekend, while highly scripted, could not have possibly ended any better if it were entirely orchestrated.

I went to Pike's Place Market over the weekend and found this Ken Griffey Jr./Ichiro Suzuki double bobblehead doll at a secondhand store. Turns out it's quite rare and valuable, so if you're a Mariners fan it's time for a ROAD TRIP!

Former Seattle Mariner Ichiro Suzuki - dubbed by some as the "Sultan of Slap" reached first base safely in his first at-bat in the first inning in today's contest between the Miami Marlins and the San Diego Padres. That base hit ties him with Pete Rose at 4,256 if you combine Ichiro's safeties recorded in both the Japanese (1,278) and North American major leagues.

In the wee hours of Wednesday morning (3:00 A.M. for those of us in Yakima) the National Pastime will get underway halfway around the world when the first pitch of the 2012 Major League Baseball season is tossed out...  in Japan!
