The Yakima Valley Pippins have reached an agreement with Yakima native Bob Wells to serve as the pitching coach on Head Coach Marcus McKimmy’s inaugural staff. With the addition of Wells, along with assistant Jacob White, the Pippins 2014 coaching staff is set and preparing for Opening Day on June 6th at Yakima County Stadium.
He also spoke about why he thinks there are fewer African-Americans than ever playing at the Major League level since the color barrier was broken by Jackie Robinson and whether or not he thinks Pete Rose should be included in the Hall of Fame.
Ken Griffey, Sr. has been a part of more baseball history than almost anyone in the game. From winning two championships with the Big Red Machine to playing Billyball with the Yanks to patrolling the very same outfield with his own son, Ken Griffey Sr. has seen and done it all in professional baseball.
I often hear from friends and family that professional sports are not "important." That if people cared as much about their communities as a whole as they did about whether or not their team won or lost, the world might be a better place.
I say that sports aren't, ultimately, important -- except when they are. If the Mariners win tonight will world peace be achieved? Of course not. Can pro sports be a catalyst to affect social change for the better? Without a doubt.
Yesterday, an old co-worker of mine treated me to a matinee` at Safeco Field. While the Mariners took another one on the chin at the hands of the Texas Rangers (12-4), my son Drew and I had a great time.
When the game ended, we went to the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame to go see the newest display and plaque featuring Ken Griffey, Jr. Junior was inducted into the M's Hall just a couple of weeks ago at another game I attended.
This week has been a bit rough on the Seattle Mariners. After winning a season high eight consecutive games, the M's split a four game series with the lowly Minnesota Twins and have lost the first two games on their current east coast road trip to the Boston Red Sox, including a 15-inning crusher last night.
