Australian rock act Sick Puppies have over 15 years of music under their belt, but since their last album they've split with singer Shim Moore. With a new album aptly titled Fury along with a talented new vocalist and guitarist Bryan Scott, Sick Puppies have managed to revitalize their sound, songs and live performance. Loudwire spoke with bassist Emma Anzai who addressed the creation of new material as well as the addition of Scott. Check out our full interview with Emma Anzai of Sick Puppies below:

Fury, what does this word and title mean to you personally?

I would probably say that it encompasses the theme of the album perfectly and just the way it all came together and how we’re feeling. It was a perfect storm because Mark [Goodwin] and I were feeling very anxious and sort of on edge and frustrated. Bryan [Scott] had this sort of urgency about him and about joining this band and making this number one and the best it could be. So all of that combined made a perfect title, Fury. I don’t know we were all just on edge and had that energy and I think that contributed to how fast all of that came together.

How did you know Bryan would be the perfect fit for the band and what does he bring to the table in regards to the new material?

I think a lot of people were skeptical and still are. To be honest Mark and I were at the beginning as well but that’s because it’s an uphill battle and we knew it. We knew the challenge we were taking on and if we hadn’t found Bryan, I’m not sure where we would’ve gone with it. We had to find the right person in order for this to work. What was it about him? First of all the voice, that definitely caught our attention. It was him singing the band's songs and hearing how that sounded. It was also just meeting him as well. You’re on tour with someone for nine months out of the year you want to make sure that you see eye to eye and you’re on the same page about many things and it’s not easy. He turned out to be a very decent and nice person that we can really gel with.

Again, that voice, he’s very versatile with his voice. His playing and his writing style -- we were very much on the same page with the genre of music we were writing. We like the same bands and stuff and that’s really important because if you have someone completely opposite, it’s a bit hard to write with that person. He’s got a great sense of melody. That’s another thing I noticed straight away and that sort of perked our ear.

How was the overall recording and creative process for you personally?

It was different because it was the first time we worked with someone else for this band. I don’t know, it was like when you step outside of your comfort zone and you don’t know what’s going to happen. We sort of threw caution to the wind and luckily we came up with something. It took a few songs and doing different processes until we hit on something and that’s when we were like, “Okay we can go from there.”

Can you tell me about the latest single “Stick to Your Guns” musically and lyrically?

It was one of the first songs that we wrote with our producer Mark Holman in Nashville. It came together really fast. Actually, it was one of those things where it just kind of wrote itself and came out. Thematically and lyrically it was really close to the hearts of us because we were going through a bit of a tough time and it was cathartic being able to write something like that and being able to put that out there for other people to hear. It’s about not letting anyone tell you that you can’t do something. You have to put you mind to it and no one’s going to help you. You have to do it yourself. You have to stick to your guns and make something happen.

With a new album comes massive amounts of touring, What is one non-electronic thing you must have on tour with you?

[Laughs] I like the non-electronic part. You know what, that’s kind of difficult for me. It would probably be a food item. I would say plain oatmeal, always have to have that on hand. It’s a very neutral food, if you’re really hungry and it’s not going to bloat you out before a show, it’s non-acidic. [Laughs]

Our thanks to the oatmeal loving Emma Anzai of Sick Puppies for the interview! Catch the band on tour at these stops and pre-order the 'Fury' album here
