No doubt you've heard the expression "it takes one to know one".  If that's true, then this warning from former President Jimmy Carter needs to be given our full attention.

Failed President Senses Failure

Carter, who was a disaster as President, says we are headed for a disaster in America.  Takes one to know one and he oughtta know!

Carter warns that the US is on the brink of a "widening abyss".  On the eve of the one-year anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol, Carter was talking about the political division in the country.  The former President wrote a guest essay posted in the New York Times saying,

"Our great nation now teeters on the brink of a widening abyss. Without immediate action, we are at genuine risk of civil conflict and losing our precious democracy. Americans must set aside differences and work together before it is too late."

Biden Unifies Nothing

Carter urged Americans to agree on constitutional principles and norms of fairness and respect for the law.  He also called citizens to condemn violence and polarization and counter the spread of disinformation.

Ok, Mr. President...I hear your warning.  I share your concerns but the current President must have missed the memo.

Today, Thursday morning, January 6, 2022, the anniversary of the riot at the capitol, the President and Vice President had a golden opportunity to  lead the way in "setting aside our differences and beginning to work together."  But what did they do instead? They doubled down on even more division with hysteria and hyperbole. Instead of moving us forward, they relived and replayed their version of an alleged Trump-inspired insurrection and coup.  Any feeble attempt at unity was drowned out by the volume of Trump-bashing while painting Trump supporters as domestic enemies.

“The former president’s supporters are trying to rewrite history. They want you to see Election Day as the day of insurrection and the riot that took place here on January 6 as a true expression of the will of the people. Can you think of a more twisted way to look at this country, to look at America? I cannot...I will stand in this breach. I will defend this nation and I’ll allow no one to place a dagger at the throat of democracy.”

VP Harris Goes Over The Top

What wasn't a misrepresentation or lie was simply ridiculous.  But then the Vice President does have a reputation to uphold.

"Certain dates echo throughout history, including dates that instantly remind all who have lived through them — where they were and what they were doing when our democracy came under assault. Dates that occupy not only a place on our calendars but a place in our collective memory. December 7th, 1941. September 11th, 2001. And January 6th, 2021."

Kamala Harris spoke at the Capitol Thursday morning along with Joe Biden to mark the anniversary of the January 6 riot that disrupted the effort by President Trump and Republicans in Congress to lawfully challenge the certification of the votes of several states in the Electoral College. Harris opened her remarks comparing the Capitol riot that saw one person killed (by law enforcement) and a handful of deaths by natural causes (one of these deaths is now being looked at as being from a police beating) to the attacks at Pearl Harbor and on 9/11 that killed thousands of Americans.

Are Our Elections Secure Or Aren't They

Both Harris and Biden made a pitch for new voting regulations.  But with all due respect, I thought they said in no uncertain terms to President Trump and his followers that our elections were just fine and above reproach? Hmmmm?

Vice President Harris concluded by saying "We cannot sit on the sidelines. We must unite in defense of our democracy in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility",...Yah, madam Veep, we know the, the thing....blah blah blah.

Remember in school when you had to write a report of a specific length and some of the students had nothing of substance to say so a common tactic was to fill space by quoting revered and respected speeches or documents oh, like...say, the Preamble to the Constitution? Hmmm?  (Did you ever see the movie "Meet The Parents?  The scene when actor Ben Stiller has to say grace at the family dinner table is a cringe-worthy performance reminiscent of the Vice President's remarks. (see below)

Some Riots Are More Equal Than Others?

So Joe, Kamala, if I may be so familiar, since you want us on the team, right, there are those who would say the folks who broke into the Capitol did in fact "get up off the sidelines" in an attempt to defend the democracy.   You don't have to agree with their approach, but you do have to listen and try to understand that event in light of their perspective if there is ever to be any hope of uniting.

After all, you listened and understood when BLM and Antifa supporters attacked and burned our cities and business and killed dozens along with billions in damage.  You understood that level of violence and destruction and gave them all a pass.  So I say find one-tenth, no one one-hundredth of that level of understanding for what motivated the events of January 6th last year if you are at all SERIOUS about "ensuring domestic tranquility"

But we all know you are not.  The swamp games continue, the divide grows deeper and the "genuine risk of civil conflict and losing our precious democracy" that President Carter warned of grows.  The fire smolders, and today you could have poured out soothing water, instead, you poured gasoline.  A disaster is coming...look in the mirror, it takes one to know one. Just ask Jimmy.
