CWU To Help Meet The Demand For S.T.E.M. Teachers

Central Washington University (CWU) in Ellensburg is about to go full steam ahead on STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering & Math.  Teachers in these subjects are in demand so when classes begin in September, CWU is introducing a Master of Education specialization in STEM Leadership.

The STEM masters program is the only one of its kind in Washington — and Selah High School science teacher Alex Soto is excited to be among the first recipients of the specialization, “I’m looking to gain further knowledge about how to teach science to people from different backgrounds and lifestyles, and get everyone super excited about STEM in general....In the long run, I could see myself transitioning into a district-wide STEM facilitator position. So, having this knowledge under my belt now will be very helpful.”

A CWU news release points out the 48-credit hybrid program is geared toward the convenience and needs of teachers, allowing them to attend classes in the summer without having to manage daily teaching responsibilities.   The new program is open to all elementary through 12th-grade teachers and is expected to take about two years to complete.

Build on the lessons learned during the COVID pandemic, the majority of the instruction taking place online, including specialized leadership courses to help develop the skills needed to become STEM leaders in their communities. Candidates will spend only one or two weekends in class, with the remainder behind the computer at home.
