Yakima County Faces $15 Million Shortfall Before 2027 Budget
Yakima County is facing a big financial challenge as it prepares for the 2027 budget, with officials projecting a shortfall of more than $15 million—more than the county’s reserves can cover.
URGENT SOLUTIONS ON THE WAY
The Yakima County Commissioners announced that, while they successfully adopted a balanced budget for 2026, the county’s growing costs are outpacing revenues, calling for urgent "structural solutions" for the future.

MUST TAKE ACTION NOW TO PREVENT PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE
In a recent news release, the Commissioners warned that without action, the county could face deeper financial problems. To address the 2027 shortfall, the commissioners say they're proposing a series of seven Fiscal Accountability Measures aimed at controlling expenses and making sure the county stays on solid financial footing.
HERE COMES THE "SOLUTIONS"
The measures include a freeze on all vacant positions, as layoffs are seen as too costly and disruptive. Departments and offices that rely on overtime will be required to review their costs with the Commissioners to identify alternatives. Also they say reclassification requests will be "evaluated carefully" to understand their full impact, and expenses such as travel, memberships, and subscriptions will be temporarily suspended and reviewed.
EVERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY
Commissioners stressed the importance of a collective effort, urging elected officials, managers, and employees to “lean in” and contribute to the county’s financial stability.
They say everyone has a role to play in the challenge and they hope the measures can help avoid more painful cuts later in the year.
“Circumstances require an all-hands-on-deck approach,” said a county official. “Our solutions begin with our people, and I trust that we can rise to this challenge together.”
