When asked many people say they would keep money found on a remote road in a paper bag with no way to identify the owner. Many say if they found money in a remote area they may hold on to it for a while before actually spending the money.
But if the money was found in a busy area, on a road of traffic then most people say they'd work to try and find the owner.

WHAT DOES WASHINGTON LAW SAY ABOUT FOUND MONEY?

In Washington State, the law says if you find property, including cash you are allowed to keep the property "sixty days after the find was reported to the appropriate officer or designee if no owner has been found, or sixty days or sixty days after the final disposition of any judicial or other official proceeding involving the property, whichever is later."

DON'T BE LIKE THIS GUY IF YOU FIND MONEY IN A BANK PARKING LOT

Are you thinking twice about keeping the money you may find in the future? What if you found cash in a bag in a bank parking lot. That's what happened to a man from Connecticut last year. 56-year-old Robert Withington found a bag in a parking lot that contained nearly $5,000 in cash. Instead of trying to find the owner he decided to keep the cash.

THE BAG WAS FROM THE BANK AND CONTAINED TOWN TAX DOCUMENTS

The problem for Withington is that the bag the money was in was clearly marked with the logo of the bank where it came from. The bag contained cash from the town's tax department. Security cameras spotted him taking the bag from the parking lot. He's been charged with larceny.

BE CAREFUL WHEN HANDLING THE MONEY OR OTHER ITEMS YOU FIND

Yakima Police warn if you find cash in a bag be careful it could be related to drugs. In fact, authorities say some cash may even be contaminated with drugs like fentanyl.
