Billie Jean King is Getting the Breakfast of Champions Treatment. She’ll Appear on a Wheaties box

Growing up in the valley during the sixties and seventies and active in sports in school. We watched our sport heroes like Willie Mays, Steve Largent, Jack Nicolaus just to name a few and you might have even collected the baseball cards or you had to have Wheaties for breakfast because you were collecting the boxes with the latest star that was on it at the a time.

There has been a long list of Athletes gracing the front of the box. It all started with Lou Gehrig in 1934 and then the first female athlete, Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Through out the years the list of outstand athletes grew.

Today, I was looking skimming the over the sports news and this sport news pops up. Billie Jean King will be getting her own limited edition Wheaties box. I had to check the list of athletes on the Wheaties box.

I was surprise that she has not been on before this. Chris Everett has one and they were at the top of women's tennis in 70's. Hmmm, what else has Billie Jean done? 39-time Grand Slam champion, inducted twice in the Tennis Hall of Fame. Billie Jean has been a strong voice for equal prize money for women and men. The founder and member of the Original 9, the group of women who laid the groundwork for the WTA Tour and the passage of Title IX. Plus Elton John wrote a song to honor Billie Jean. ( Do you know what song that is? )

In a interview the Associated Press, Billie Jean stated “I’ve dedicated my life to equality for all, uplifting those around me and inspiring girls and women, in particular, to dream big," King said. "This box feels like a full circle moment as we celebrate the next generation of champions.”

The King Limited Edition Wheaties boxes will be available in the stores late May.
