Man Arrested Identified After Killing Mother on Sunday
Yakima Police say a 40-year-old man being held on a murder charge in the Yakima County jail killed his 74-year-old mother early Sunday at a Yakima Apartment. The suspect has been identified as Jeffrey Pickens. He's facing a first-degree murder charge in the Yakima County jail. His mother, the victim has been identified as 74-year-old Mary Pickens. Capt. Jay Seely says the two had a history of domestic problems.
Pickens was arrested after police arrived at the 18th Avenue apartment at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday and saw him running from the area. Officers say when they arrived in the area they hear 10 to 15 shots. After arresting pickens they found his 74-year-old mother dead in the apartment. Officers say numerous shots were fired at the victim and in the home.
Pickens is expected to make a court appearance Monday afternoon on first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
