Rick Moranis Is Not Expected to Return For ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’

With rumors flying that most if not all of the original cast would return for the next Ghostbusters film, fans might have been eager for the return of character Louis Tully, played by the great Rick Moranis. But it now appears Moranis won’t reprise his role after all.

In an exclusive first look at the film from Vanity Fair, the publication writes, “Rick Moranis, who has limited his screen work in recent years, is not expected to reprise his role.” The article also includes the first concrete plot details for the movie, along with a bunch of new images of the film.

It’s been confirmed that most of the rest of the original surviving cast from the ’80s films will return to reprise their roles including Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver.

While Murray, Aykroyd and Weaver all had cameos in the 2016 all-female reboot of Ghostbusters directed by Paul Feig — which wasn’t directly connected to the events of their two Ghostbusters film — Moranis declined to appear in that film. Ghostbusters: Afterlife continues the story from the original two Ghostbusters film, with new characters discovering the old characters’ busting equipment just as a new supernatural threat to emerges.

“I wish them well,” Moranis said in a rare interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in 2015. “I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?” It seems he hasn’t changed his mind since.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will open in theaters on July 10, 2020. The first trailer for the film debuts online next Monday.
