After a 13-year break between albums, Tool are enjoying the massive success of their latest LP, Fear Inoculum.

If one band member has his way, the wait between this album and the next will be much shorter.

“My hope is we get in and knock out another record,” drummer Danny Carey admitted in an interview with Metal Hammer. “We have tons of material. It’s not going to take 12 years, or if it does, I’ll probably be so old I probably can’t pick up my sticks any more! But my hope is we’ll do another record and just keep moving forward.”

Though his statement may generate excitement, Carey was sure to clarify that new music isn’t in the band's immediate future. “We’re going to tour on this [album] probably for two or three years at least, I imagine. It feels like what we’ve done on every album, and then I guess we’ll see where we’re sitting after that.”

While fans can wonder about when new Tool music may appear, how it will be distributed is also a topic of intrigue. Carey confirmed that Fear Inoculum is the last album in a five-LP deal, completing the band's contract with RCA Records. “There’s more motivation," the drummer admitted. "The carrot on the stick has gotten larger because now we’ll be free agents. We don’t have to deal with a record company or, if we do, we deal with it on our terms, because we can do whatever we want now.”

As for songs, Carey confessed that Tool didn’t leave much on the cutting-room floor following the Fear Inoculum sessions. “There are no leftover Tool songs because of the process it takes to compose our songs – the way we hash it out in a room with all three or four of us, that there’s tons of riffs and jams and things," he explained. "But there’s no put-together songs that are sitting in the eaves.”

Tool will hit the road for a nationwide tour next month, beginning with an Oct. 13 performance at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento.
