Yakima Area Lakes Stocked With Trout

Well, this year should be about the best trout fishing in years.

The lakes have been stocked and the temps have been cool and we have had a ton of rain, which should make the fish happy with lots of bugs and fresh water.

April 22nd may be Earth Day nationwide, but I can't imagine a more interesting way to look at the trout lakes opener. How does today's hatchery trout fishery program give clues to future generations on sustainable food sources?

I think the trout and salmon hatchery programs could be the primary source for future state food markets if we can continue mitigation efforts and habitat restoration.

Ocean fisheries can no longer sustain the boxed fish surplus at the local supermarket, the fish simply aren't there any more. Hatchery fish that live wild in lakes offer a great model for sustainable farming and harvesting of fish.

Enough nerd talk, we already know fish you catch taste better than fish you buy.

Here in Yakima, you don't have to drive very far to find fish.
