Science and technology have finally done something that I’ve been waiting for for what seems like all of my adult life. They have successfully taken two of my favorite movies, mashed them together, and created the ultimate hodgepodge of Robocop and Paul Blart Mall Cop!

If you’ve never seen RoboCop, know it’s about a cyborg that fights crime and protects people. If you’ve never seen Paul Blart: Mall Cop, what are you even doing with your life? It’s about an alternate reality where Kevin James wasn’t successful in movies.

The real-life mash-up is now on patrol in Portland, Oregon at the U.S. Bancorp Tower in downtown Portland, “ROB” started his duty in December, providing continuous surveillance for HUMAN security officers inside the tower.

The 5-foot 5-inch robot that looks like a tall trashcan or a dialect from Doctor Who weighs around 420 pounds, comes complete with thermal imaging, 4K quality and 360-degree video surveillance, two-way intercom, and other security features to help protect the building and people inside it.

Rob is the first ASR (Autonomous Security Robot) from the company Unico Properties (a private real estate firm) patrolling in Portland, but if all works well, there may be others.

I may have poked fun at ROB above, but this is cool, and if it can help keep people safe, then I’m all for it! What do you think? Should we have ROB’s everywhere? Is this robot taking the job of a standard security guard? Will Portland citizens leave it alone or attempt to destroy it, proving that “we can’t have nice things”? Tap the App and let us know!
