Ken Griffey, Sr. Talks Baseball, Family on KATS

Earlier this morning, I had the distinct pleasure to get to chat with Ken Griffey, Sr. as he is promoting his new book Big Red: Baseball, Fatherhood and My Life in the Big Red Machine.

I asked Senior about his current life in the game of baseball, what made Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson so successful, what he remembered most while in attendance at his son's - Ken Griffey, Jr. - induction into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame last year, and what advice he had for parents and kids alike trying to develop successful young players.

He also spoke about why he thinks there are fewer African-Americans than ever playing at the Major League level since the color barrier was broken by Jackie Robinson and whether or not he thinks Pete Rose should be included in the Hall of Fame.

Happy Jackie Robinson Day

I often hear from friends and family that professional sports are not "important."  That if people cared as much about their communities as a whole as they did about whether or not their team won or lost, the world might be a better place.

I say that sports aren't, ultimately, important -- except when they are. If the Mariners win tonight will world peace be achieved?  Of course not. Can pro sports be a catalyst to affect social change for the better? Without a doubt.

Enter Jack Roosevelt Robinson.

Welcome Back-Back-Back, Baseball

In my house, we refer to Opening Day of a new Major League Baseball season as "New Year's Day."

But as a fan of the Seattle Mariners, most of the time the first day of a new campaign is also the last day my team is in first place

Todd E. Lyons Blog: My Son and I Visit Ken Griffey, Jr.

Yesterday, an old co-worker of mine treated me to a matinee` at Safeco Field.  While the Mariners took another one on the chin at the hands of the Texas Rangers (12-4), my son Drew and I had a great time.
When the game ended, we went to the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame to go see the newest display and plaque featuring Ken Griffey, Jr.  Junior was inducted into the M's Hall just a couple of weeks ago at another game I attended.

Two Amazing Plays Turned By the Mariners This Week

This week has been a bit rough on the Seattle Mariners.  After winning a season high eight consecutive games, the M's split a four game series with the lowly Minnesota Twins and have lost the first two games on their current east coast road trip to the Boston Red Sox, including a 15-inning crusher last night.
