How awesome would that be if one of our local band's here in Yakima Valley won something like this. I mean it is one of the biggest festivals around. If you are a local band or you know someone who is, get in on this contest! I look forward to seeing the results for sure!

CALL FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS TO ENTER OPPORTUNITY ROCKS, A LOCAL BAND COMPETITION

One lucky band will land performance gigs at the Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival on the 4th of July and Bumbershoot on Labor Day!

SEATTLE, WA (May 30, 2012) – One Reel announced today the Opportunity Rocks band competition for local young musicians. Presented by Microsoft, the Opportunity Rocks contest invites young musicians in the Seattle area to submit their original music for a chance to show off their tunes, charisma and moves at two paid festival gigs this summer. The winning band earns a spot on the new Microsoft Stage at the Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival on July 4th playing with Hey Marseilles, Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs, and Campfire Ok, as well as a coveted spot on the Starbucks Stage at Bumbershoot on Labor Day. Today through June 11, 2012, artists 24-years-of-age or younger can submit up to three videos featuring original songs to the contest webpage. A jury will select semi-finalists to showcase online, where the public will weigh in on who they want to see perform.

The competition gives emerging homegrown talent an opportunity to showcase their abilities and aligns with Microsoft’s commitment to youth empowerment.

“We’re happy to present this fun competition for young, local musicians and help them gain exposure in the community,” said Lori Harnick, general manager, Citizenship and Public Affairs, Microsoft. “We’re very interested in helping to create opportunities for youth, so we’re delighted to have the chance to support young musicians from the Seattle area.”

Microsoft is joined in support of Opportunity Rocks by Starbucks, who champion music and youth initiatives of their own, including Little Big Show, Hot Java Cool Jazz, Seattle Art Museum ReMix and Starbucks Youth Action Grants.

“At Starbucks, we believe that one of the most important ways for a community to come alive is through youth involvement,” said Rodney Hines, director of community investments for Starbucks. “Our programs are about inspiring the next generation to get engaged and create positive solutions for the challenges they see in their communities.”

Both festival gigs for the winning band will be on One Reel produced stages. The Microsoft Stage is a new feature at the Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival, and will be programmed and produced by One Reel as part of the collaboration with The Center for Wooden Boats. The two organizations hope to connect the 4th of July maritime tradition in South Lake Union to the Family 4th Presented by Starbucks on the north end of the lake, creating a more cohesive, inclusive lakeside celebration.

One Reel exists to introduce emerging artists to new audiences, so Opportunity Rocks is a natural fit for us,” stated One Reel Programming Director, Chris Porter. “We feel fortunate to have found community partners in Microsoft and Starbucks, who also believe so passionately in the young talent that abounds in our region.”
