A Note From Yakima City Council

On March 3, the council unanimously directed staff to bring back a resolution with six dates for Cruise the Ave. The resolution that the council passed this week changed the last date in that list from 9/9 (a Wednesday) to 9/12 (a Saturday). We will have to revisit the resolution again to change that 9/12 date to 9/19. Because the original motion was for the 19th, not the 12th.

Different Opinions Of The Community

With this event, there has always been some pushback on how it is handled, who funds it, and why it needs to be funded.

“Oh, thank you, sir overlord, for allowing us peasants to drive on the roads our tax dollars pay for.” – Andrew E.

Andrew does make a point. Why do there need to be votes, just so people can drive their cars? While many agree with his sarcastic comment, it is important to remember that it’s not just people driving their cars, but many people sit along Yakima Ave to ‘enjoy the show’.

Helping keep people safe and the event organized is where the city gets involved, and the votes are made.

Options have been asked about closing other areas of the city, possibly to allow food trucks and other vendors. Maybe one day that will be the case, but when and if that does happen, we still have the question: where will that money come from?

But for now, get your ride shined up and ready to cruise.
