5 Ways to Get Around Yakima Without Driving

Gas prices are the highest many people have ever seen. Here are several ways you can keep your car at home while still doing the things you need to do around Yakima.

Walk
When in doubt, just walk. Especially now that the weather is getting much nicer outside. Sure, there'll always be that chance of rain but if you have the time, a nice walk is never out of the question. Unless you're shopping for a week's worth of groceries. Then your walk home may be a bit over-encumbered.

Ride a Bike
Yakima is very friendly when it comes to our biking pals. Though it's true we don't have bike routes like you might find in Portland or Seattle but I've been seeing more bikes recently. Probably a combination of the warmer weather and gas prices.

Take the Bus
Yakima Transit has been serving Yakima ever since I can remember. Quick and efficient to get to where you need to go and you don't even need to worry about parking. The next bus is always coming up so maybe start taking the bus. You'll save in the long run.

Horseback(?)
Now, I need to look up the logistics and legalities about this but I have, 100%, seen someone riding on horseback up 16th avenue ending up on Summitview. Sure, it was a wedding proposal, however, if that's allowed maybe more horses are allowed on city streets. We're not talking about parades, either.

Carpool
Okay, sure, this may still involve driving but maybe only half the time or a quarter of the time depending on haw many people you can get to carpool with you.

And, at the end of the day, just try to convince yourself not to go. Driving to Seattle just for fun? Driving up to some remote hill in Yakima just to take pictures of a sunset to post on Facebook? Driving to the other side of town just to shop at a different grocery store for a change of scenery? Maybe it's not that worth it at the moment.

To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.

Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
