Yakima City Council member Holly Cousins has been named the Grand Marshal of the 60th annual Sunfair Parade set for Saturday September 25. It's a parade that many attend before going to the Central Washington State Fair.

THE PARADE ROLLS FROM 16TH TO NACHES AVENUE

The parade starts at 10:00AM at 16th and Yakima Avenue. The parade will roll on Yakima Avenue to Naches Avenue where the parade ends. Organizers say they chose Cousins as the Grand Marshal for her many years of work helping to put the parades together.
The organizers are hoping hundreds of people are involved and thousands of people show up to watch the parade along Yakima Avenue. If you are attending the parade you are encouraged to wear a mask given the amount of people that are expected to watch the parade.

HURRY UP AND GET SIGNED UP TODAY

Businesses, schools, politicians and organizations that want to be a part of the parade need to sign up as soon as possible. You can find applications at the Sunfair Parade Facebook page, Yakima Federal Savings and Loan and Ron's Coins and Collectables. The deadline to enter the parade is Friday September 17.

THE PARADE HAS BEEN AROUND YAKIMA FOR A LONG TIME

The parade has a long history. A press release says it was first started in 1961 as part of a Sunfair, sponsored by the Yakima Sundusters, a promotional group of the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce.
In 1972, the parade was moved to September to coincide with the opening of the Central Washington State Fair.
