Friday's Sunnyside Shooting Leaves Injuries and Fear

A celebration in Sunnyside that's one of the largest and most popular events in the valley was disrupted by gang gunfire Friday that left five people injured including a 7-year-old child. The annual Cinco de Mayo celebration which was set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday was cancelled Friday after the shooting and after concerns by organizers and authorities were considered. Sunnyside Police talked to 7 juveniles but they were released as the investigation into the shooting continues.

Police say one gang member fired shots at a rival gang member

Hundreds of people were at the event at about 4:45 pm Friday when police say one gang member near the carnival fired shots at another gang member in the crowd. Bullets struck a man and four kids. Authorities say none of the wounds are considered life threatening.
They say a young boy is being treated at Astria Sunnyside Hospital for a gunshot wound to the face while the 35-year old man from Vancouver Washington was being treated at Harborview Medical Center on Saturday for a gunshot wound to his leg. The youngest victim is 7-years-old. No information on the condition of the victims is available.

So far no arrests have been made after police talked with 7 juveniles

After the shooting officers took two juveniles into custody at the event and 5 others were detained at a home in the 600 block of Harrison Avenue in Sunnyside. While police found a gun inside the house the 7 juveniles were released to their parents as they continue to investigate the shooting.

The shooting forced cancellations and now have some wondering about safety

Organizers of the event say they cancelled the celebration because they were concerned about community safety.
Another event called the The Yakima Latino Art Rally set for Saturday in Wapato was also cancelled because of safety concerns.
Some in the community are now wondering how this and other violent gang shootings will impact future events in Yakima and the lower valley.
