Finding The Fry In History

Word on the street, the really OLD street, is that Thomas Jefferson brought the French Fry to America from Europe and it likey was first served in Belgium, not France.

Air fryers have put the light crispy fry into the hands of us average non-chef types and those fries are excellent...but, it's tough to be the pros.

The folks at Taste of Home did a fast-food french fry taste test and after munching through all of these...

  • Burger King
  • Chick-fil-A
  • Culver’s
  • Five Guys
  • KFC
  • McDonald’s
  • Popeyes
  • Portillo’s
  • Shake Shack
  • Wendy’s

...they chose my personal favorite, WENDY'S:

The honor of the best overall french fry goes to Wendy’s. These fries were made with unpeeled potatoes, so there was a little bit of potato skin at the end of each fry for texture. The fries were crisped to perfection and perfectly salted. Without the bells and whistles of a special shape, fancy dipping sauces or bold seasonings, these were simply perfect, classic fries at their best.

I concur!

Washington Is A Winner In The World Of Potatoes

Now, when you talk about potatoes, you are talking about....Idaho?  Maybe, they have the reputation, but don't sell Washington short!  Check out the stats from Washington!

Potatoes represent the State’s third-largest agricultural crop with a farm gate value of over $772 million.  “Farm gate value” means the unprocessed value as it leaves the farm....the industry itself has a $7.4 billion economic impact and is responsible for 36,000 jobs in the State of Washington.  99% of the potato farms throughout Washington state are family-owned businesses whose owners have deep roots in their communities

Washington State potato growers rank first in the per-acre yield of potatoes. Yakima's northeast neighbor, Grant County, is the #1 potato-producing county in the United States!

World's Most Expensive French Fries

All of this spud talk is leading up to National French Fry Day on Wednesday, July 13th, and the Guinness World Record most expensive plate of fries!  A Manhattan Upper East Side restaurant named Serendipity3 earned a Guinness Record for the world's most expensive french fries when chefs cooked up Creme de la Creme Pommes Frites, a plate of fries listed for --- $200.  They've done it before, and Wednesday, they are back!

What's the recipe?

The fries feature ingredients including Chipperbeck potatoes, Dom Perignon Champagne, J. LeBlanc French Champagne Ardenne Vinegar, cage-free goose fat from France, Guerande Truffle Salt, truffle oil, Crete Senesi Pecorino Tartufello cheese, shaved black summer truffles from Italy, truffle butter, organic A2 A2 100% grass fed cream from Jersey Cows, Gruyere Truffled Swiss Raclette and a topping of 23-karat edible gold dust.

Over the top, right?  Goose fat? Jersey cow cream?   Hold on!

Let's just add salt, some plain old ketchup (not Heinz), and maybe a little more salt, and call it good. Really, really good!
