Why Did WA State Dems Select a Macklemore Song at the DNC?
The Democratic National Convention just ended in one of my favorite American cities, Chicago. I watched all 4 days of the DNC so that you didn't have to.
Madame Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have officially accepted their political party's 2024 presidential election nominations for president and vice president
In my opinion, music was the MVP of the DNC!
Take the Beyonce B-side song, Freedom, for instance. It was played as the VP Harris theme song. It was featured in a produced video and also whenever she took to the stage.
Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on stage on Day 1, and Freedom was blasted on the speakers. Then she dashed off to continue hitting the campaign trail because she had a campaign stop in Wisconsin the next day.
The entire four-day convention was filled with tons of speeches and personal (and sometimes tragic) stories from everyone, from political representatives from all over the country and regular people to a couple of former presidents and their wives and members of VP Harris and Governor Walz' families.
Quite a few celebrities showed up from out of nowhere, too, like Mindy Kaling, Eva Longoria, Sean Astin, Wendell Pierce, Spike Lee, and even Olivia Pope and President Fitz Kerry Washington, and Tony Goldwyn.
Day 2 is the day that most people are still talking about—well, at least those who watched the DNC live on YouTube and other streaming sites. It was pretty hype.
DJ Cassidy turned an otherwise super boring "Roll Call" session into one of the best convention sessions I've ever seen.
At the Republican and Democratic national conventions, roll calls are where state and territory delegates get to officially shout out who they're backing for president and vice president.
DJ Cassidy kept the crowd pumped during Roll Call by playing pieces of popular songs as a salute for each state. I thought he was personally picking out each song, but it turns out, he wasn't!
There are many clips and late night talk show jokes about the DNC musical concert Roll Call on YouTube and TikTok that are fun to watch, like this one where Lil Jon took to the stage to cheer on his home state of Georgia. He had me dying when he said, "From VP Harris...to Governor Walz!", instead of "from the window...to the wall."

Wisconsin delegates showed up and showed out by wearing their cheese head hats at the convention. I love it!
I was curious which song was going to be played for Washington State, as well as for our Pacific Northwest neighboring states of California, Idaho, and Oregon.
California selected California Love by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac.
Idaho picked Private Idaho by The B-52's.
Washington State decided to go with a song that not only pays homage to a band from our state, it is also a certified, pumped up mainstream hit: Can't Hold Us by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Ray Dalton.
I think this was the chosen song because it is about overcoming obstacles and not letting anything get in your way to help out your fellow man.
"...Validation comes from giving it back to the people...Raise those hands, this is our party. I got my city right behind me, if I fall, they got me." - Can't Hold Us (Written by Ben Haggerty, Ryan Lewis, Ray Dalton)

Oregon chose Float On by Modest Mouse, who coincidentally are from Issaquah in Washington State.
This article from NPR discusses why all the other states and territories chose their songs.
