Now that it's 2026 it's interesting to see what happened this year in history.

Not that any of us want to feel older, but it is nice to reminisce to see where we were and see how far we've come.

There's a popular store in our area that, though existed before 1986, changed its name in 1986 to become what we know it as today.

It was also known as the first of its kind in all of Washington State right here in Yakima.

That store is Grocery Outlet.

According to KIT, grocery outlet was originally simply called Canned Foods located just behind the Nob Hill overpass near 1st and Nob Hill. It was a store that featured discounted items and overstock to sell at low, low prices.

in 1986 it officially changed the name to Grocery Outlet and became the first Grocery Outlet in all of Washington State.

Now, there are somewhere around 530 Grocery Outlet stores in the United States with almost 80 of those stores located in Washington State alone.
