Man Injured in Wednesday Yakima House Fire

A house fire in the 500 block of North 6th Avenue early Wednesday morning, injured one person, and caused an estimated $100,000 in damages.

The fire was reported at about 2:06 am Wednesday

Yakima Fire Department (YFD) firefighters were called to the scene at 2:06 am Wednesday. They arrived to find a house fully engulfed by fire. Crews went to work to try and save the single-family home. But they first had to rescue a man that was inside the burning home when they arrived.
They located and evacuated him. Medics helped the man on scene before an ambulance transported him to a local hospital for treatment of burns to his arms and hands.

Crews say closed doors helped save half the home from fire

Crews were able to contain the fire to half of the house. They say the key to being able to save the home? Closed doors. Firefighters say the closed doors helped minimize damage to the remainder of the house. The Yakima Fire Department encourages community members to close bedroom doors, especially before going to sleep.
The Fire Safety Research Institute notes that closed doors can reduce fire growth, limit property damage, keep temperatures down and save lives.

The family was left homeless but they're getting help

A total of 17 firefighters responded. YFD crews were on scene for about two hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The family is being helped by the American Red Cross.
