M’s Get Back-to-Back Jacks, Strong Starting Pitching in ‘W’ Vs. Texas
Tom Murphy and Jacob Nottingham hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the third inning to start the scoring and give the Mariners a lead that they would never relinquish in a 5-0 win over the Texas Rangers tonight (May 27) at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
The victory was the third in the Mariners last four games as the A.L. West division rivals opened the first of a four-game series.
The homers were all the offensive support that starting pitcher Chris Flexen needed as he spun a gem in the finest outing of his major league career. Flexen tossed 7 complete shutout innings allowing just 3 base hits ans surrendering only a single base on balls while striking out 6 batters en route to raising his record to 5-2 on the season and lowering his Earned Run Average to 4.34.
Seattle raised its team record to 24-27. The two teams get after it again on Friday. Justus Sheffield (3-4, 5.11) will take the pill and toe the rubber for Seattle. First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
