It was a wet weekend for firefighters battling the Cold Creek Fire on White Pass which is now 35% contained at more than 616 acres. The fire kept Highway 12 closed over the past weekend but rain on Saturday helped firefighters make progress on the blaze which started last Monday. Fire Spokesman Ben Shearer it's burning in timber that hasn't seen fire in more than 100 years. He says it's been tough to fight with old snags and a lot of slash or underbrush that firefighters have to deal with.
While no structures have burned 50 are currently threatened by the fire. Level 2 evacuation notices are still in effect for homes and cabins around Rimrock and Clear lakes.
Washington State Transportation officials say the Westbound closure is eight miles east of the summit at the Upper Tieton Rd. Access for local and recreational traffic is allowed. Officials say they'll provide an update on the closure on Monday afternoon.
Forest officials are talking with The Morning News on KIT Monday at 8:15 a.m.
