The Supreme Court of the United States has struck down the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which denied federal benefits to lawfully married same-sex couples.

By a 5-4 decision, the high court overturned the legislation originally signed into law by former President Clinton.

The SCOTUS is now poised to deliver its opinion on Proposition 8, California's ban on gay marriage.
