‘The Ultimate Metallica Show’ Recap: Chris Cornell Covers ‘One’
We are mere weeks away from the release of Metallica's new album, 72 Seasons, which means we're also getting closer and closer to the start of their worldwide M72 tour.
Continuing our anticipation of that tour—which comes to North America in August—I dedicated the first full hour of The Ultimate Metallica Show to nothing but live Metallica, covering a lot of ground from 1989 to 2022. In the second hour, I served up one of the coolest covers of a Metallica song I've ever heard: Chris Cornell's take on "One," performed live at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. As the story goes:
I was going to do "One" by U2—I Googled the lyrics, but the words to Metallica's "One" came up. I thought, "You know what, I'm gonna add those," and it seemed to work pretty seamlessly. Those are things that, when I'm doing a cover song, maybe goes some degree beyond what you'd expect. And that's just me having fun.
