Happy National Washington Day!  Never heard of it?  Read on!

Have you heard of the National Day Calendar?  We get it every day at the radio station and occasionally use it as a source of content for conversation.  Here's how they reference themselves: " National Day Calendar is the authoritative source for fun, unusual and unique National Days. We now track nearly 1,500 National Days, National Weeks and National Months.  In addition, our research team continues to uncover the origins of existing National Days as well as discover new, exciting days for everyone to celebrate."

In addition to National Clean Up Your Room Day and National Lipid Day, today, on May 10th, National Washington Day recognizes The Evergreen State. Yea!

Is it tied to statehood or any other monumental state achievement like the World's Fair, completion of the Space Needle, the dramatic Kingdome Implosion?  Not that I can find! Just a regular day with a nod to Washington.

Statehood?  November 11, 1889 Washington became the 42nd state to join the Union. The Space Needle was completed on April 21, 1962.  On March 26, 2000 a series of well placed explosive charges brought down in Kingdome in a dusty and dramatic fashion.  So why today?  I guess the answer is  - Why Not Today??

From the on-line Calendar. "The state’s history is filled with battles for possession over land.... While still a territory, Washington came to near blows over an eager settler, a boundary, and a potato-rooting English boar. Today it is known as the Pig War of 1859."

Washington is known for its magnificent beauty, from mountain ranges & volcanos, to rain forests, and spectacular Pacific Ocean views beyond a rocky coastline. Eastside orchards and agriculture provide another look at the diversity of life in Washington.

So how do we celebrate "our" day?  The calendar almost always has some suggestions.  "Join National Day Calendar as we celebrate National Washington Day. We’ll seek solitude and the best cup of joe. Discover the snowiest mountain peaks and visit the best music spots. Explore Washington’s history and find an adventure. Use #NationalWashingtonDay to share on social media."

So now you know, it's OUR day in Washington...just because!.
