Washington Trick-or-Treaters May Face Fewer Sweet Treats

Trick-or-Treaters this year may be getting more tricks than treats in their bags, because rising prices on everything Halloween, and haunting candy aisles across Washington state and the rest of America.

Empower.com 'candy crushed' the numbers, and many folks are cutting back on what they're handing out on Halloween. Like many things in the country, chocolate prices are on the rise, and 57% of Americans plan to cut back.

And it's not just in the candy they're handing out; 52% of people plan on tightening the belt on all Halloween spending, even though it's one of the more popular holidays.

Where Does The Money Go With Halloween?

Candy is the big part, followed by home and yard decorations, followed by personal costumes, and the one I'm guilty of, costumes for my pets. According to Empower, we spend an average of $33 on a pet costume. (But it looks adorable, so it's okay… right?)

Why Might People Be Souring On Halloween

Besides the price tag of everything going up, the non-stop hustle and bustle of life has worn me down, as I'm sure it has many others. The whole "keeping up with the Joneses" when it comes to Halloween can be exhausting, so I've given up.

I've also grown to realize that the candy that I've handed out on Halloween is barely for children FROM my neighborhood but from other places in the city. That can add up quickly when I'm 'candy dishing' it out to the whole city of trick-or-treaters, not just my small community.
