What’s the Most Snowfall Yakima Has Ever Had in 24 Hours?
According to the fine folks that track such things at the over at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Yakimanians have experienced approximately 2 to 4 inches of snow that began falling yesterday and has continued quite steadily throughout today (February 12th) thus far.
While a couple of inches in the last day or so is the most we've gotten -- by FAR -- this past Fall and Winter, it does not come anywhere near the all-time record for most snowfall in a 24 hour period in Yakima.
That distinction belongs to a day in December of 1964 when a whopping 14 inches fell in just a single day! It does, however, come awfully close to tying the record for the month of February when 8.2" fell back in 1994.
November of '84 also set a one-day record with 11.2" and the runner-up occurred in January of 1963 when 13.6 was the white stuff tally.
With more snow and chilly temperatures in the forecast through Presidents' Day (February 15th), we may get a pretty healthy accumulation but it likely will not stick around too long. The daily high temperatures for the Yakima Valley are expected to jump quite rapidly into the mid to upper 40's beginning on Tuesday (February 16th). Fine by me -- I don't think anybody would like a repeat performance of December '64 when Yakima was buried by 37 and a half inches (over 3 feet!) of snow.
Stay safe, stay warm and rock on! \m/ \m/
