I’m a big fan of etiquette, especially when it’s followed! Consideration, respect, honesty- these are the core principles when it comes to etiquette, but when it comes to actual ‘personal etiquette,’ it varies from person to person. We’ve asked our audience what they feel are some unspoken etiquette rules that we should follow.
Etiquette From The Past
As I stated, I’m a fan of the topic, and I’ve written about it before in the past. Etiquette topics include boating, flag handling, driving and crosswalk etiquette, even tips for how you should behave at a strip club.
I’ve talked about this topic with my audience before and got several great pieces of unwritten rules, so I wanted to tap the audience again to see what else they had.
The Question Asked To Our Audience
“What are some unspoken etiquette rules (i.e., don't take the top nacho with all of the cheese)?”
With that question being asked to our listening and reading audience throughout the Yakima Valley, here are 7 MORE Unspoken Rules of Etiquette.
Yakima 7 More Unspoken Rules Of Etiquette
Take The Last Of Something Without Checking:
Lots of food topics, including taking the last soda out of the fridge and not telling anyone “we’re out” or eating the last piece of fried chicken out of the bucket. Double-check, make sure you’re not being rude, then go for it!
Don’t Mix The Foods Spreads:
Toast crumbs on the butter or peanut butter in the jelly (or vice versa). That’s a no-no.
Courtesy Wave:
Road rage happens enough out there; if someone lets you get into their lane, is it that much more energy to give a little wave of appreciation?
Holding The Door Open:
Back in the day, this used to be a gender thing, but in today’s world, just hold the door open for someone. If you get to the door first and people are behind, be the ‘gentle person’.

Passing Gas:
Pass gas in private, not in public, and if it accidentally happens, if it’s loud, own it and apologize.
Mouth Covered:
We've talked about chewing with your mouth open. The only time this is acceptable is if you’re a cat or a dog, or you are super sick and can’t breathe out of your nose, but if you’re that sick, you probably shouldn’t be out in public needing etiquette anyway. Which leads to the covering your mouth when you're sick, sneezing, coughing, etc.
Bonus Unspoken Rule of Etiquette
Listener Michael Caulfield gave one that is very true, but just the thought of it happening in public- the sheer awkwardness made me laugh.
“Never ask a person how they lost a limb”
– Michael Caulfield.
On this topic, comedian Dave Attell has a great bit that relates to this, check out his NSFW comedy bit here.
