On Saturday, July 12th in Yakima, a little shop of wonders on Fruitvale Boulevard brought people together one slice of pizza at a time. Yakomix, a newly opened shop, hosted a fun trade event. It was a place where people could sell and trade comic books and other collectibles and a place where folks could meet others in the community and help the business grow.

Collectors, Creators, and Community Collide in Yakima

Years ago, a man named Jacob created a group called 509 League of Comic Geeks. He had always wanted to build a community where people could share their love for collecting, reading, and discussing comics. A few months ago, another fan named Oren opened Yakomix with a similar goal. This event had been years in the making—and it finally kicked off.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., multiple vendors set up tables to showcase their collections: comic books, Funkos, cards, video games, and everything in between. Yakomix supplied delicious pizza, which was devoured as if the entire crowd had been starving for days.

The sun may have been heating things up, but the community pressed on. Many were excited to find their next treasured addition.

The event even brought in an out-of-town guest: podcaster West Coast Davenger, who came to check out the store and its amazing selection. Like many others, he has a deep love for the stories found in comics and wanted to share that passion.

Overall, there was a great turnout—plenty of happy people left with exciting finds. I walked away with these three comic book issues:

  • DC Comics – Red Hood and the Outlaws #9
  • DC Comics – Future State: Gotham #1
  • Marvel Comics – Exiles #35

Why these three? The DC titles feature one of my favorite characters, Red Hood—so I’m always thrilled to add more. And the Exiles issue had a cover starring another favorite of mine: Magik.

The event was a success. As the future continues for this community, it’s exciting to imagine what comes next for this growing comic and trade show. Jacob and Oren have built something that the community supports. With a possible next event in late fall—if you missed this one, don’t miss the next!
