You Could Help Mitigate Yakima Disasters

Yakima County officials have started a process to update a plan to protect you from natural and human caused disasters. The county has started updating the  Hazard Mitigation Plan to identify the greatest threats and hazards facing the community, and how to best mitigate the impacts on people and property.

County officials are hoping you'll take a community survey

County officials say "Hazard Mitigation is any effort to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property. Through mitigation planning,  county officials can recognize they can’t stop floods or other events from happening, but they can implement long-term solutions to reduce their devastating impact on residents, families, homes, infrastructure, and our natural resources." As part of the plan and the effort you are invited to take a Community Disaster Preparedness Survey. County officials say the survey "will help the planning committee to understand your experiences with disasters, potential impacts, and the current preparedness of your household and the community as a whole."

The goal of the Hazard Mitigation Plan is to save lives, property, economic, and natural resources by reducing the vulnerability of Yakima County to disaster events. During this project, county officials say they'll identify risks, assess capabilities, and formulate a strategy to reduce the community’s disaster vulnerability.
