You’re getting sleepy, very sleepy. You feel relaxed, so very relaxed. You’re now going to think back to a time when you were happier. May 2nd, 2008. The first Iron Man movie is being released and you are so filled with joy and excitement. Okay, so that might be my happy time, but what about you? When was the last time you were able to feel and remember so much joy and excitement? To have your nerves and senses calmed, and all and all felt relaxed and rejuvenated? Hypnotism is a practice that can achieve just that and so much more.

Happy World Hypnotism Day! According to National Day Calendar.com, it happens on January 4th and “promotes the truth and benefits of hypnotism. The day also aims to remove myths and misconceptions about hypnotism.” Thanks to movies and cartoons, I know I definitely have some false thoughts about the practice.

I reached out to Emily K Harris of Emily K Hypnosis (Yakima) to help navigate and understand the world of hypnosis. First off, anyone and everyone can be hypnotized. In fact, we’re all in different states of hypnosis many times in our lives. Enjoying a song, watching television, daydreaming, and star gazing, hypnosis on some level can happen. I mentioned how I always believed that hypnosis was just a form of relaxation, but it’s not.

“Hypnosis is not sleep. It is not relaxation. Hypnosis is just focused awareness, so you are in a state where you are highly receptive to positive suggestions. We often have you focus on relaxation in the session to help you focus, but often during sessions, you may feel excited, or have lots of energy.” – Emily

When I asked about how in the movies, people are knocked unconscious and hypnotized to do stuff against their will and become secret agent martial artists, and how likely that is to happen? She laughed “That’s Hollywood!” Great hypnosis that is meant to help you, will keep you conscious and alert the whole time. “We want you to remember all the insight you gain from the hypnosis session, so unless you’re using hypnosis for medical purposes such as surgery, you’ll be conscious and alert the whole time.” She continued how “You are always in control during hypnosis. Those stage shows where people do crazy things for entertainment, which I got my first taste of when I was 15, are fun, but if it was something you really didn’t want to do, your brain wouldn’t allow you to do it, and you would emerge, or snap out of the hypnosis.

The big question I had to ask was, does hypnosis work?

“Yes, even if you’ve tried other things to resolve your issue, hypnosis can still work because it works differently. It taps into the power of the subconscious mind where our memories and emotions are stored, and it addresses the seed of the issue.” - Emily

There are several places in Yakima that offer hypnosis, in-person, and virtual meetings. Siren Hypnotherapy, Tim Barlen Hypnosis, and of course, Emily K Hypnosis. If you’d like to see how the practice of hypnosis and self-hypnosis can help you with anything, from getting over a fear, losing weight, quitting smoking, to just flat out being the best you, you can be, check any of them out and happy World Hypnosis Day.
