A Nostalgia Look Back Through The Years @ Yakima’s Rainier Square!
So much has changed in the Yakima Valley since I was little.
Heck, even in the past 10+ years, so many businesses have come and gone.
Buildings are being abandoned only to get a new lease on life from another business.
Or being torn down to the ground, only to have a bigger, better (mostly) building erected in its place.
My wife and I were driving down Nob Hill Blvd (coming upon Rainier Square) discussing the subject of 'what used to be there'.
She didn't believe me that a Blockbuster Video used to be located right there, next to the former location of Red Robin (the first Red Robin franchise restaurant ever built in the country, FYI).
This then took us on a nostalgia trek about what used to be at Rainier Square before many of the shops and restaurants we love now.
Before Habit Burger, Wendy's, Crumbl, Jamba, Memorial Center, Dickies, US Cellular, MOD, Starbucks MOD Pizza, Jimmy John's, Ted Brown Music, Popeye's, Hilton Home Hotel (and many other fine stores in the shopping center), a few of those businesses were there, but it was a giant parking lot for a store called Montgomery Ward.
Looking back for photos of the area, the farthest back I could easily find was 2007, not that long ago. Then I remembered we're in 2025; man, I'm getting old!!
Looking at some of these photos can just make your jaw drop. Take a look at Yakima's Rainier Square from the past decade (before it was known as Rainier Square).
