Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at exactly 6:01 p.m.

In collaboration with a nationwide event today in Yakima, at precisely 4 p.m. at Grace of Christ Church, 9 S. Eighth Ave., there will be a Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Walk that will proceed to the Millennium Plaza, 22 S. Third St. in downtown Yakima.
This  45-minute peace walk will commemorate the night Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on a balcony at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., 50 years ago.
There will be a small outdoor program at the plaza and then at 6:01 p.m., the Rev. Robert Trimble, president of the local NAACP chapter in Yakima, will ring a bell 39 times -- one chime for every year of MLK Jr.'s life. The event will end with a reading of 40 names of individuals who lost their lives in the civil rights era of the 1960s.
This event is being held nationwide in memory of the slain American civil rights leader. (if you happen to be on the other side of the mountains today, Seattle's walk is happening here.)
