A woman walking in the 1400 block of North 16th Avenue on Sunday was struck and killed by a vehicle.

POLICE SAY THE WOMAN WAS WALKING IN THE ROADWAY

Yakima Police are now investigating. They say it was reported at about 9:35PM Sunday. When officers arrived they found a woman in the roadway who had been struck by a car. She was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital where she died. The 79-year-old driver from Toppenish was not injured or cited.
Capt. Jay Seely says the man was driving a 1998 Ford pickup Southbound on North 16th Avenue when he struck the woman who police say was walking in the roadway. The woman has not been identified. Police say neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a contributing factor in this collision.
The investigation continues Today.

IT'S THE SECOND FATAL PEDESTRIAN/VEHICLE CRASH SO FAR THIS YEAR

It’s the second fatal pedestrian crash in the city so far this year. The first happend in late May when a 27-year-old was struck and killed as she was crossing Tieton Drive at 40th Avenue. Police say she was walking in the crosswalk when the driver of a vehicle traveling eastbound on Tieton hit her at a slow speed. Capt. Jay Seely says the driver was making a right turn onto 40th Avenue when the woman was struck. The driver apparently didn't see the woman crossing the street.
Seely says the driver of the vehicle was not cited. He says it was simply tragic accident.

THOUSANDS OF PEDESTRIANS DIE EVERY YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA in 2019, the most recent year statistics are available, 6,025 pedestrians died in traffic related crashes. They say that means someone was killed every 85 minutes in traffic crashes in the United States in 2019.
