Celebrating Yakima’s Best, One Letter at a Time

A is for apples. Of course it's for apples. One of our major crops here in the Yakima Valley it wouldn't be Yakima without apples.

B is for beer. Like apples, Yakima is also very much so known for its beer from the valley that ships all over.

C is for Cooper Kupp. Been in two Super Bowls, currently playing for Northwest's own Seattle Seahawks and does Yakima proud.

D is for Davis. Though, yes, technically it's A. C. Davis High School, but nobody actually calls it that. Just Davis gets the point across.

E is for elephant ears. It wouldn't be a trip to the Central Washington State Fair without an elephant ear or three.

F is for Fresh Hop Ale Festival. One of the premier beer events in the whole world. Travelers from all over fly into Yakima just to be a part of this fun beer festival featuring the fresh hop ales and more.

G is for Greenway. The Yakima Greenway is perfect for walking, biking, and there are plenty of events that happen there as well.

H is for hops. Not a day goes by where someone from Yakima reminds someone else that about 75% of the hops grown in the valley are used for beer in the entire United States of America.

I is for IKE. Only because E was taken for elephant ears. IKE is one of the main high schools in Yakima.

J is for John Riggs. That's me, I'm from Yakima and proud of it.

K is for Kyle MacLachlan. With several movies and TV show credits to his name, we gotta give him a shout out. Us older folk know him from Dune and Twin Peaks but newer viewers may know him best from the Fallout series.

L is for Larson Building. The tallest building in Yakima located downtown stands heads and shoulders above many other buildings in our town.

M is for Memorial Hospital. Though it has gone through a few name changes over the years, most still refer to it as Memorial. Many (most) born and raised people in Yakima were birthed here.

N is for Naches River that flows right into Yakima. Perfect for fishing, rafting, and more.

O is for oranges, and more produce that you'll find at our local Farmer's Market.

P is for Pippins. Our Yakima Valley Pippins is our own baseball team and always a fun time at the ballpark.

Q is for quality. Yes, it's pretty generic, but the quality of produce, the quality of our agriculture, and just the quality of life here is second to none.

R is for Randall Park. The park with the ducks has been one of the main parks in Yakima for all ages.

S is for Scenic Drive. Y'know, you don't have to live there to drive on the road. Take a trip sometime and check it out, check out all the pretty houses and see Yakima from that great vantage point.

T is for Tieton Cider Works. Amazing cider from right here in Yakima. It's always a treat when I travel to see this at other locations outside of town.

U is for Union Gap, our neighbors. It's lovely we share are area with our friends in Union Gap.

V is for vaudeville and a creative segue to mention our own Capitol Theatre. It was once a place for vaudeville when vaudeville was a thing.

W is for wine. Yes, like beer and cider, Yakima may have been known for it's wine first. Some of the best in the world found right here in the Yakima Valley.

X is for Xochimilco Mexican Restaurant. We have some amazing restaurants in our town and, well, honestly it was the only thing I could come up with that started with the letter X so props for them for having an X in their name.

Y is for Yakima Herald-Republic. Sure, it already has Yakima in the name, but the long-time newspaper for folks in the Yakima Valley, it's what we all had growing up and still to many this day.

Z is for Zirkle Fruit Company. One of the main fruit companies based right in Yakima. And, much like looking for a word or business that starts with X, I'm glad they start with Z.
