LSD was all the rage in the 60’s. Musicians used it especially when working on new sounds and music. Well, who would have thought that the trips would keep happening 50+ years later? Broadcast Operations Manager at KPIX, Eliot Curtis was trying to fix an old synthesizer that he found in a cold, dark closet in the San Francisco station, when he started to feel different.

After coming off of a 9 hour trip, Curtis found out that he had accidentally been dosed with LSD residue from the Buchla Model 100 synthesizer. The station had rumors of the 1960's engineers would dip their fingers into liquid LSD for inspiration and then touch the equipment. Looks like it was more than just rumors.

Curtis cleaned “a crust or a crystalline residue” off of a module and the substance seemed to dissolve in his hand and started taking effect. “It was… felt like I was tripping on LSD,” he said and started feeling a “weird tingling sensation” a little bit later.

I guess a damp, cold, dark closet would be the perfect conditions to keep the drug potent, even for a half of century. Don’t worry, Curtis is okay. His trip went well, and he is back at work, and even finished fixing the instrument, while wearing gloves this time.
