Teen Arrested After Sunnyside Cinco De Mayo Shooting

Five people were shot during the annual Cinco de Mayo festival in Sunnyside and ever since police have been investigating the crime. On Wednesday Sunnyside Police announced the arrest of a 13-year-old boy in connection with the gang related shooting. The teen is being held in the Yakima County Juvenile Justice Center on five counts of first-degree assault. His bail has been set at $500,000. The shooting forced officials to cancel the three day celebration earlier this month.

Hundreds were attending the event when the gang shooting happened

Hundreds of people were at the event when police say one gang member near the carnival fired shots at another gang member in the crowd. Bullets struck 5 people in the crowd. Authorities say none of the wounds are considered life threatening. The Associated Press says according to an affidavit "a 35-year-old man was struck in the leg, a 12-year-old boy was hit in the lip and tongue, a 6-year-old girl was hit in the leg, and two boys, ages 16 and 14, were shot in the legs. Police say the teen arrested is a gang member."

7 juveniles were taken into custody on the day of the shooting but were released

After the shooting officers took two juveniles into custody at the event and 5 others were detained at a home in the 600 block of Harrison Avenue in Sunnyside. While police found a gun inside the house the 7 juveniles were released to their parents as the investigation continued.
On Wednesday police announced the arrest of the 13-year-old suspect.
