I'll admit it. I'm not a huge fan of soccer. Football. Futbol. Footie. "The Beautiful Game". But I am a huge fan of the human drama that comes with athletic competition so last night's thrilling shootout victory by the Seattle Sounders in which they captured their first MLS championship helped to remind me of when I first began to fall in love with sports.

I have been to quite literally hundreds of professional, college and amateur contests in my life but my first ever experience inside Seattle's old Kingdome was in 1982 to see the Seattle Sounders play the Edmonton Drillers in a match in the now defunct NASL. I was only 11-years old at the time so I don't remember much other than the players running onto the "pitch" (AstroTurf-covered concrete!) to the glorious sound of their theme song, the sound of legendary broadcaster Bob Robertson and the final score: Sounders 9, Drillers 0

And I still have the pennant I bought to this day.

Congrats Sounders and all of their TRUE fans! Thanks for the excitement and making me feel like a little kid again!
