Upcoming Yakama Nation Treaty Days Events Cancelled [Video]

It has been over a year since we went into shutdown due to the pandemic. Some events are returning in one form or another. The Yakama Nation, in 2020 canceled all Treaty Days events. Which commemorates the Treaty of 1855.

The Yakama Nation Cultural Center. Posted on their Facebook page. In-person events will be canceled for 2021. Including the parade and salmon lunch. At a later date, a virtual event is being planned.

So for at least one more year. There goes a lot of plans on the rez for Treaty Days. Tribal programs won't be able to come up with creative floats. Local high school bands won't be able to march around the Cultural Center in Toppenish.

For one more year. Communities around the Yakama Nation. Won't be able to line up to enjoy the parade or the salmon lunch. Or just to gather around. To tease and laugh at each other.

But as communities try to control this virus. It looks like some tribal members are taking to social media. To get their pow wow fix. Dancing in their regalia as they would at a pow wow.

Even for myself, as a grassdancer in the pow wow trail. It is a lifestyle I grew up in. Just talking to friends and family. We all are missing these Treaty Days events. Not just Treaty Days. But any pow wow on the Yakama Nation, the Northwest, and the country.
