When do you shower? First thing in the morning, letting the water hit your face to jolt you awake to help start your day? Or do you shower at night just before you go to bed? That way, you don't sleep all night in your filth. But do you do that every night? Is that too much? Or is the old saying "cleanliness is next to godliness" something you hold so true that you shower every day, sometimes multiple times a day?

Most likely, it is too much! Some people only shower when they feel dirty. Those people might smell a little more potent than the rest, but depending on how often they "feel dirty," they may align with what dermatologists recommend.

On a recent segment on the Today Show, assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Langone Health, Dr. Mary Stevenson, says how a couple of times a week is pretty much what you need.

"[People] should be showering, bathing or cleansing yourself every two to three days." – Dr. Mary Stevenson.

She does say that it really depends on the person, lifestyle, and skin type. How often you're working out, etc. The danger of showering too much comes with drying out your skin and washing away natural bacteria and oils that protect your skin from infections.

If you're a fan of the long hot showers, that could be another mistake you're putting your skin through. Keeping your showers to three minutes and lukewarm is recommended. When you're shopping for skincare products, look for stuff that is meant for sensitive skin, and of course, when in doubt, talk to a dermatologist.
