Yakima Police Identify Victim in Fatal Shooting Near IKE

Shawn Tolbert. That's the name of the 16-year-old victim killed in a shooting outside Eisenhower High School on Tuesday. Yakima Police say the victim is the cousin of the 15-year-old shooting suspect.

The incident started with a fight between the 15-year-old and 18-year-old

Police Capt. Jay Seely says the 16-year-old victim and the other 18-year-old victim started fighting when the 15-year-old suspect pulled out a .22 caliber handgun and opened fire. Bullets struck the 18-year-old in the wrist but fatally struck the suspect's 16-year-old cousin, Shawn Tolbert. The 18-year-old student was treated and released from Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital on Tuesday. The 16-year-old Toblert died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The Yakima County Prosecutors Office is now investigating to make a big decision

Meanwhile the 15-year-old suspect is being held in Yakima County Juvenile Jail. He's facing charges of Second-Degree Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and 9 counts of First-Degree Assualt. Yakima County Prosecutor Joe Brusic says he's working closely with the Yakima Police Department in the investigation. Since the suspect is 15-years-old it's up to the prosecutor whether or not to file a motion to transfer the case to adult court. Brusic tells KIT News he hasn't made a decision. He says he'll investigate, research the background of the suspect before announcing a decision about whether or not to request the case be transferred to adult court.

Police recovered the gun used in the shooting on Tuesday

Police say they recovered a .22 caliber pistol used in the shooting. The gun was found during the arrest of the 15-year-old suspect.
Eisenhower High School resumed classes Wednesday with a larger police presence at both Ike and Davis High Schools.
