Remember when Amazon Prime offered 2 Day shipping? And how excited we were? It was game changer right? Well, the game has just changed, again.

The FAA has given their approval to Amazon.com to operate a drone delivery fleet called Amazon Prime Air. This will allow Amazon to deliver small packages within 30 minutes. Most of the drone deliveries will occur within 7.5 miles of a warehouse. UPS has also been approved for drone delivery.

Yakima is about 30 square miles, we would need three of these to serve us properly. Drone delivery will most likely start in major cities. Yakima being a proper mid-sized city in the America, we will also be most likely to getting drone delivery after major US cities do. This would include Seattle, which is Amazon’s headquarters and is also a major city.

So what does drone delivery look like? Well, it’s mostly “small packages”, which are defined as 5 lbs. or less.

Will the day come, when we look above and see thousands of drones busily zipping along to deliver mail, parcels, medicine, pizza and any other small to medium sized item?  I have seen this in movies. Not far-fetched. So are there test markets for this? Yep. In 2019, UPS started a three year medical delivery trial via drone in Raleigh. So far so good on that one.
