Oregon and California Issue Warnings For AI Use in Schools
It's a new era and it's never been done before but education officials in California and Oregon have issued stern warnings about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in schools, raising concerns over student privacy, data security, and what they say is "algorithmic bias."
THE EXPERTS SAY THERE ARE RISKS AND THAT STUDENTS NEED PROTECTION
Many people agree the warnings highlight the potential risks associated with rapid AI integration in the educational system in both states.
Officials in Oregon and California say they recognize the potential benefits and educational opportunities that AI technology can bring to the classroom but the focus has now shifted towards making sure AI systems are implemented responsibly and transparently, fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
CALIFORNIA TELLING STUDENTS TO USE CAUTION WHEN USING AI
California's Department of Education, in a formal statement released earlier this year, highlights the need for schools to use caution while implementing AI tools. The advisory warns that AI systems should be selected carefully, "accounting for potential bias, data protection, and ethical considerations. Notably, the department emphasized the importance of involving all stakeholders, including students, parents, and educators, in the decision-making process."
OREGON ALSO TAKING SPECIFIC STEPS TO GET PARENTS INVOLVED
Officials in the state of Oregon are taking similar steps to protect students. In fact the state has issued set of guidelines to schools across the state, urging them to approach AI integration with caution. The guidelines call for the transparent disclosure of AI use in schools, the need for informed consent from parents or guardians, and evaluations of AI systems to prevent biases.
THE WARNINGS COME AT A CRUCIAL TIME
The warnings from both states come at a time when many school districts have started using AI technology for various reasons. Those who respect privacy are very concerned. They're concerned about the collection of information collected by AI calling for major security measures. Both states are leaders in addressing these concerns and challenges talking with experts, developing guidelines and policies the "harness" the benefits of AI while keeping the negative parts of AI at a minimum. Officials in California and Oregon say the aim is to safeguard students.
WASHINGTON IS WATCHING
As you can imagine officials all around the country including those in Washington State are watching the states and what they are doing to control AI and protect students futures.
