Was looking through Facebook last the other day when I saw a story that broke my heart. As the new kid in town, I had been looking forward to visiting a Yakima staple that has been recommended to me several times – Mel's Diner. I drove by it many times and was looking forward to checking it out.

Then, Rona. Everything closed. I figured once everything opens up, I will stop by for a visit.

Then I read on a Facebook post that Mel’s has closed.

Ugh. (sounds of heart sinking).

I love small businesses. These are the folks who take a chance and open a business. They employ workers, make awesome products and give people purpose. They are the backbone of America!

Stupid Rona.

I didnt read about the false statement that Mel's had closed on Mel’s Facebook page – it was one of those community pages. Lots of comments. Lots of shares. Mel’s CLOSED? People we're sharing this as if it were a fact.

My heart broken. But, something didn’t feel right.

I am a skeptic by nature. I always have questions. It gets me in trouble. A lot.

I sat there and stared at the screen and that small voice in my head that said, “Call Mel’s.”  So, I did. The phone rang one time. A warm, friendly female voice on the other end of the line answered, “Mel’s Diner!”

“Hi, my name is Jim, I just called to ask, you are not closing, are you?”

“On no, that was a rumor. We are opening back up in June, but are currently doing mobile orders.”

Whew! (wipes brow with relief)

“Well am glad to hear that. I just moved to town from California and was really looking forward to stopping by.”

“Yes, we would love to have you when we open sometime around June 1st. In the meantime, we are taking your mobile orders now. Would you like to order?

I ordered the Club Sammich with Fry Sauce. I drove over, paid, picked it up took it back the office. Good stuff!

This goes to show, don’t believe everything you read. Lots of misinformation out there. Not to mention this carelessness can greatly affect business, which can affect your neighbors and friends negatively.

I don’t know about you, but before I post something online, I will do a little fact checking to make sure I don’t spread misinformation. Cause, who wants to be that guy/girl?

Am excited that Mel’s is reopening in June. I hope to see you there. I will be firmly ensconced in a booth, enjoying Mel’s while presumably checking my facts BEFORE posting on social media. I encourage you to join me.

All My Best,

The Jimshow
