Back in June of 2020, 30-year old Jonathan Lopez, a Hermiston man who was running for a seat on the Umatilla County Board of Commissioners, claimed he received a racist, threatening and extremely vulgar letter in his mailbox telling him, among other things, to "go back to your worthless country" and "you are not welcome here and will never be anything in this community or state."

The letter went on, stating, “Umatilla County kills [racial slur] like you and are dumped in the fields and river. That’s why our crops are the best." The hateful and intimidating language continued, “Don’t waste your time trying to become anything in this county we will make sure you never win and your family suffers along with all the f***ing Mexicans in the area. America is for the God fearing, pro gun life humans who refuse to be controlled by the government. There's no room for people like you here!”

Once he turned the letter over to authorities, they took it seriously because he was a local figure, and he was running for office, hence, it was worthy of an investigation. The whole yarn began to unravel however, as the officials burrowed further into the background of Lopez' story and the lack of plausibility that someone else had authored the scourge.

He also lost his race for Position 3 on the Umatilla County Board of Commissioners, placing fourth in the primary.

And now, Lopez just pled guilty to one count of “Initiating a False Report” after it came to light he had composed the prose himself.

He was sentenced to 18-months of probation by Circuit Court Judge Christopher Braur. Also, he’ll serve two days of jail time and pay a fine.

Judge Braur is also requiring Lopez to issue a public statement, apologizing to the community for his actions, and complete a racial bias program.
