Yakima POLL: How Early Is Too Early To Decorate For Halloween?
You may have read about my neighbors who engage in a friendly Halloween/holiday/giant-skeleton/home decorating war every year.
I, for one, love it, and I am happy to call them my neighbors!
It entertains our little community, and as a nice bonus, cars tend to slow down to admire the spectacle in the front yard.
When it comes to preparing for an upcoming holiday, I see it in two categories.
Commercialization and Fun.
When it comes to the Fun category, I say go for it. If it is in your yard or house, and it's not hurting anyone, more power to you!
And if you live in an area with an H.O.A., use that giant skeleton to tell them what you really think!
"It's after the Fourth of July... It's fine to begin decorating for Halloween … it would've been tacky prior to the Fourth of July, though!" - Olivia W. (my neighbor/giant skeleton owner).
Commercialization, on the other hand, I think that's where we all can agree that the capitalist money-making machine needs to push the brakes a little.
The fact that you can see Halloween decorations in stores now (in August) is jumping the gun (in my opinion).
Especially with the candy. Who is going to buy a bag of Halloween candy now and keep it until October 31st?
It isn't quite as bad as when Christmas decorations pop up, which I was just informed this morning by my good friend Bobby Mendoza Jr. that Christmas on store shelves has already begun!
But with no more major holidays between now and Halloween (I've never left cookies and tax forms for Labor Claus, so Labor Day doesn't count), do you see a problem with stores getting a HUGE jump start on selling Halloween items?
Take our two polls, one for each of the categories. How early is too early for Halloween, both in terms of buying the stuff for it and for decorating?
